These past few months have been a rollercoaster of emotions for immigrants and immigrant families. With the arrival of ICE near San Francisco it has amplified the struggles that many are currently facing. People are currently on high alert of their surroundings for any vehicle or person of ICE that will possibly lead to life changing events. None have been more attentive to such details than that of our high school students.
If you follow anyone from Pitt on social media that has an immigrant background , it is 80% likely you have seen some sort of advocacy of personal rights or information for ICE whereabouts. Many students have come out and said on their instagram notes, “thank you for letting us know where ICE was.” What may feel like a small click of a finger and post on a story stating “ICE is near..,” is truly saving the lives of many Pittsburg residents. Seems like immigrants rights is something all of us can agree on. According to student Hector Alfaro, “I think it’s a wonderful thing to see so many young people united under the same cause.” One thing is certain here at Pitt, everyone knows what our school is based on is community. And community fights for one another.
